Emile Antoine BOURDELLE (1861-1929)
Bacchante with grapes, unsmooth belly, so-called first composition
Bronze with green patina signed and monogrammed, signature of the founder Alexis Rudier. Marble base.
H. 77 cm, W. 53 cm, D. 20 cm
Total height: 80 cm
Bourdelle made the model of the Bacchante aux raisins between 1906 and 1907. There are several variants of this scultpure, of which the artist came back to the subject several times with Vieilles bacchantse (1903) and Bacchantes aux jambes croisées (1906). A copy of this model of the Bacchante with grapes in bronze is kept at the Musée Bourdelle.
As Bourdelle began using his monogram as his signature in 1919 and working exclusively with Alexis Rudier from 1915 onwards, the dating of this bronze can be dated between this period and the mid-1930s when the beneficiaries ended this collaboration with the foundryman.
