The English artist William Callow trained in outdoor painting as well as watercolour and etching in the 1820s. In 1829, his master Thales Fielding found him a job as an engraver in Paris. In the French capital, he exhibited a watercolour depicting Richmond Hill at the 1831 Salon, which was noticed by King Louis-Philippe, who employed him as a drawing teacher for the Duke of Nemours and Princess Clementine.
Travelling frequently to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, Callow kept detailed travel diaries and recorded his memories of his travels in drawings, such as the one presented here.
