Polymnia, the muse of eloquence and rhetoric, is represented here wrapped in her veil, in a meditative attitude, with her chin resting on her right hand.
The large group sculpted in marble from the Borghese collections, now in the Louvre, illustrates this classical iconography inherited from Antiquity and serves as a model for the central composition of our painting.
