Document: A two-page handwritten letter from the Italian historian Pietro Morselli (Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Florence, undated) to be given to the buyer, indicates that the painting he examined is, in his opinion, a work of the youth of Ipollito Scarsella. The historian states: "The delightful picture certainly intended for private devotion, is a fine example of the early work of the Ferrarese painter Ippolito Scarsella called Il Scarsellino (c. 1551 - 1620)".
