Sumptuous ceremonial tablecloth embroidered on the theme of opera, early 20th century.
Made of fine linen canvas, entirely and very finely hand-embroidered with a superb and remarkable Appenzell embroidery, with pulled thread, spread thread, feather and sand stitch.
A rich décor composed of 16 large medallions each illustrating a scene from a different opera, including "Madame Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini, "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, "Tristan et Iseult","Faust", "Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen" by Richard Wagner, "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Cosi fan Tutte" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Rigoletto" by Giuseppi Verdi, "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini, etc.... and well supported by a series of long cartridges in the shape of embroidered garlands of roses and flowers, the whole encased in a very fine work of stylized roses and volutes of embroidered threads running to the edges of the tablecloth.
