COLLECTION DE GÉRARD QUOICO, UN VIETNAMIEN À PARIS
Gérard Quoico was born in 1952 in Cap Saint Jacques, the present-day Vung Tau province, to a French military father and a Vietnamese mother. After his repatriation to France in 1954, he never returned to Vietnam. He took over his mother’s soup business in Paris in the Maubert district and started a collection of paintings, lacquers and sculptures. His curious mind also led him to explore architecture, cinematography and Asian poetry. His restaurant became an exhibition venue and a place that helped young Vietnamese students find their bearings in Paris. At one exhibition, he bought the group presented today directly from the artist, and his family kept the paintings for many years.
A graduate of the Hanoi School of Fine Arts in 1958, Nguyen Van Minh devoted many years to perfecting his lacquer technique, which he developed in depth between 1961 and 1962 in Japan. Widely acclaimed for his mastery of this medium, in 1967 he produced a major series of monumental lacquers for the interior of the new Vietnamese presidential palace. He moved to the US in 1975, where he met with considerable success, and subsequently featured in numerous exhibitions in America, France, Belgium, Italy and Vietnam.
