RACINE (John). Esther. Tragedy from The Holy Writ. Paris: Denys Thierry, 1689. - In-12, 155 x 91: (7 ff.), 86 pp., (3 ff. last blank), 1 plate. Jansenist red morocco, ribbed back, inside golden lace , golden edges (J. Bretault). First edition in-12, published the same year as the original in-4. It presents some variants in the text in relation to the latter. The illustration consists of an unsigned plate, located here after the prologue but usually found in the frontispiece. It reproduces, but inverted, the frontispiece of the original in-4, engraved by Sébastien Leclerc after Charles Le Brun. Hinge of the first dish restored. A few scattered freckles without gravity. Missing as often the first white sheet . Provenance: ex-dono manuscript "Pour Zezette", dated 6 March 1913, on the second white guard.
