first published in Lyon in 1719, this work describes one of the most famous cabinets of curiosities of the 17th century, that of Nicolas Grollier de Servière (1596-1689), cousin of Jean Grolier (1489?-1565), the greatest French bibliophile of the Renaissance. Engineer and inventor, he designed siege engines and invented various serious and eccentric machines, such as those for draining a marsh, for raising the water of a river, for beating a sheep by means of the current of a river, for bringing a boat up against the current of a river, without the help of anyone and without a sail, etc. He also invented clocks, mills, wheelchairs, or "a very comfortable chair for

All these inventions were presented in a cabinet of curiosity that attracted the attention of politicians and craftsmen alike. His collection was enriched by his son Gaspard Grollier de Servière (1646-1716) and his grandson Gaspard II (1676-1745), who published this collection which he dedicated to the Duke of
Orléans.
The book is divided into 3 parts; the first concerns lathe parts, the second clocks and the third mechanical machines. It is illustrated with a banner with the arms of the Duke of Orleans at the head of the epistle, by André Houat, a lettering, and 93 plates representing the various machines described, the majority engraved by Daudet and one by Duflos.
