Portrait of a ship. Oil on panel. Entitled bottom left "SS STELLA passing the needles". Signed lower right "Mountford" and dated "99" for 1899. Dimensions: 38 x 63 cm. Framing: 50 x 64.5 cm. Note: Stella was a passenger ferry operated by the London and South Western Railway. It was launched in 1890, was 77 metres long and had a capacity of 712 passengers. She was wrecked on 30 March 1899 near Les Casquets on a crossing from Southampton to Guernsey. 86 passengers and 19 crew members died in this tragedy.
