Cuban mahogany butler-tray. Foldable "X" leg. Early 20th-century England. Height Ht 79cm. Tray: 71 x 45 cm, thickness 9 cm. Note: Butler-trays or serving tables were made for servers or butlers to serve tea or other beverages and snacks. They were not only used on the decks of ocean liners, they were also used on the terraces of manor houses and cottages. The tray had fixed or foldable edges to prevent the service pieces from falling out on the way. In the big houses, they were made of noble wood, mahogany or rosewood. They rested on foldable X-shaped legs for easy transport and positioning. These feet were high, indeed, the English precedence was that no servant should bend before his masters or customers.
