Émile VEDEL (1858-1937) - Naval officer and man of letters. He was Pierre LOTI's friend.
After various trips to India, Ceylon, Canton and above all Cambodia, he published his Travel Diaries in 1901 in which he evokes the places and oceans he travelled during his career as a naval officer. Amazed by the splendour of the Khmer temples, he wrote Lumières d'Orient, which appeared with a preface by Pierre LOTI.
Like Pierre Loti, Émile Vedel stayed in Polynesia, where he became friends with the royal family and adopted Princess Takau-Põmare, daughter of Queen Marau Taaroa, of whom he was actually the father, and who took the name Takau-Põmare-Vedel. The Princess followed him to France, where in 1931 she published a Histoire tahitienne des Etablissements français de l'Océanie.
- File consisting of a set of correspondence, stamped envelopes and postcards addressed to Princess Takau-Põmare-Vedel from Oceania and various countries. The set also includes various menus illustrated with maps of Oceania and various papers about the Princess.
Attached, a set of photographs and engravings concerning the Indian dancer NYOTA INYOKA, with dedications to Princess Takau-Põmare-Vedel
