Cup probably intended for the preparation of hallucinogenic potions. It is carved on the outer walls of a decoration representing the jaguar god symbolically mastering snakes, with interlacing and motifs intertwined to form a whole of great beauty and a strong modernism. Hard, sculpted and polished stone, veil of concretion on the surface and traces of localized red ochre pigments. Chavin, Peru, 700 to 200 B.C. 19 x 5.5 cm.
Provenance: Sale Gaïa Paris 13 June 2007, Lot N°268 of the catalogue. Former Guillot Munoz collection built up in the first half of the 20th century after succession. A scientific analysis carried out by Doctor Blanc of the Pierre and Marie Curie University, concluding to the authenticity of this work will be given to the buyer.
