[MARIN (François)]. The Gifts of Comus, or the Delights of the Table. In Paris, at Prault's house, son, 1739. In-12, xlviii-275-(1 white) pp.., jaspered fawn calf, smooth cloisonné back decorated with garnet title piece, triple gilded net framing the dishes, threaded cups, marbled slices, hooked to the lower headdress, headdresses and jaws rubbed with epidermis, used corners including one heavily trimmed, ex-libris modern manuscript unsightly on the back of the frontispiece (binding at the time) ORIGINAL EDITION, RARE, of this work written by a maître d'hôtel du maréchal de Soubise. The warning on the history of the kitchen comes from two Jesuit Fathers, Pierre Brumoy and Guillaume-Hyacinthe Bougeant (Vicar, Col. 284-285, Oberlé, Fastes, No. 108). FRONTISPICE engraved on copper by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, unsigned, representing an allegory entitled "LES ATTRIBUTS DE LA BONNE CHERE". RELATES TO THE FOLLOW-UP: ALLEURS (Roland Puchot). Letter from an English pastry chef to the new French chef. S.l.n.d. In-12, 24 pp. Second edition probably published in the same year 1739 as the original. In this spiritual pamphlet, Count Des Alleurs responds to the warning of the Jesuit Fathers, mocking the overly scientific approach of a cuisine that would lose all its naturalness (Vicar, Col. 518, Oberlé, Fastes, No. 110).
