work Born in 1930, Niki de Saint Phalle is a self-taught artist. She began her artistic career in the 1950s and draws inspiration for her creations from several artistic movements as well as from her elders and contemporaries, Gaudi and Pollock in particular. In 1971, she married the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely for the second time. An iconic couple, they will together create many sculptures such as the Stravinsky Fountain and the Fantastic Paradise.
Alongside the Nanas, animals occupy a primordial place in Niki de Saint Phalle's work. Indeed, through his creations, the artist imagines a true fantastic bestiary in which each animal has symbolic connotations, evocative of our human nature. Like the latter, these animals have several levels of reading and are full of contradictions. They can represent both our anxieties and fears, as well as the possibilities of transcending them.
In addition to the original work, hand-painted by Niki de Saint Phalle, whose metal structure was created by Tinguely, there are ten artist's proofs, including the one we are presenting and fifty editions. The sculpture is based on a well-known figure in the history of art. No
