Karel Phillipzs SPIERINCKS (Brussels around 1600 - Rome 1639)Bacchus as a child in a landscapeChild Bacchus in a landscape, canvas, in a carved and gilt-wood Florentine frame, Baroque period46,5 x 36,5 CM - 18 1/4 X 14 3/8 IN.
Received at the Guild of Saint-Luc de Bruxelles in 1622, Spierincks left for Rome in 1624, where he met Paul Bril, the sculptor François Duquesnoy and the young Nicolas Poussin. He specializes in bacchanal scenes and works for great collectors such as the Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani
.
We will compare our painting with two children's bacchanals, one sold in Paris (PIASA, 5 décembre 2001, lot 59) and the other in New York (Christie's, 3 juin 2015, lot 24), in which the god Pan is in the same position as our Bacchus. These paintings also show a taste for antique urns and a virgilian atmosphere, in light tones inspired by Venetian painting.
