This "Choice" is composed of five short stories: Belà; Maxim Maximovitch; Taman; Princess
Mary; The Fatalist. "These short stories, whose main character, Pechorin, is sometimes the hero, sometimes the narrator, are rightly considered as the most beautiful specimens of the "classical" Russian prose" (Laffont-Bompiani).
The collection also contains Pushkin's Doubrovsky, von Wiesen's Callisthenes, Polevoy's Sokhaty, and The Jew, as well as Anna Brita (the latter two without author's name).
