Bela or A Hero of our time. In: Choice of Russian news from Lermontof, Pushkin, Von Wiesen etc. Translated from Russian by M.J.N. Chopin. Paris, impr. J. Claye for C. Reinwald, 1853. In-12 (173 x 108 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch. III, 339 pp.,; green half sorrow, back with nerves (binding of the time). Original edition of the French translation. This "Choice" is composed of five short stories: Belà; Maxim Maximovitch; Taman; Princess Mary; The Fatalist. "These short stories, whose main character, Pechorin, is sometimes the hero, sometimes the narrator, are rightly considered as the most beautiful specimens of the "classical" Russian prose" (Laffont-Bompiani). The collection also contains Pushkin's Doubrovsky, von Wiesen's Callisthenes, Polevoy's Sokhaty, and The Jew, as well as Anna Brita (the latter two without author's name). Very good copy
