This "Choice" is composed of five short stories: Belà; Maxim Maximovitch; Taman; Princess Mary; The Fatalist. "These short stories, whose main character, Pechorin, is sometimes the hero, sometimes the narrator, are rightly considered as the most beautiful specimens of the "classical" Russian prose" (Laffont-Bompiani).
