Marshal Louis Nicolas Davout. PORTUGAL (Kingdom) ORDER OF CHRIST, created in 1319. Plaque of a large cross, by Biennais. Silver, gold, enamel, three-part center on the reverse. Green leather medallion with gold inscription "Biennais goldsmith of H.M. the King of Holland, rue Saint Honoré in Paris". Lined with a frieze of palmettes. Bielnais system clip with polished iron spring and two hooks. Raw peas: 45g. Diameter: 84 mm. T.T.B. (slight shine above the heart under the crown). First Empire period. Marshal Davout was appointed on May 8, 1805. History: The Marshal bears a plaque of the Order of Christ on his official portrait by Gautherot (now disappeared), copied by Marzocchi de Belluchi (see p.97). Davout's uniform, preserved at the Empéri and captured in 1807 by the Russians, bears the plaque of the Order of Christ in canetille.
