‡ AN OTTOMAN SWORD (YATAGHAN), TURKEY, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY with slightly curved single-edged blade formed with a reinforced back-edge, decorated with small gold koftgari panels, incorporating a brief inscription on one side, silvered copper hilt cast with traditional ornament in low relief including trophies-of-arms and exotic birds, in associated silver scabbard embossed with scrolls and flowers inhabited by mythical beasts 58.8 cm; 22 7/8 in blade The inscription appears to be "Dhu'l-Fiqar", the name of Imam 'Ali's sword.
