Baccarat, Japanese landscape trim, circa 1880 This japanese landscape trim was made by the Baccarat crystal works around 1880. Founded under the reign of Louis XV, the French crystal manufacturer Baccarat demonstrated its excellence at World's Fairs throughout the 19th century. This ruby crystal set comprises two vases and a jardinière. The set is emblematic of the quality of the crystal works. The gold-enameled decorations on the vases depict a Japanese landscape with Far Eastern flora and fauna. The wading birds are particularly characteristic. The jardiniere is adorned with a waterscape flown over by wild geese. A vast golden sun emerges from a mountainous background. The transparent crystal handles are also adorned with gold decorative motifs. Each element of the set is mounted. The crystal-maker's seal, affixed since 1875, shortly before the creation of this piece, can be found under the base of the gilded bronze frame. During the same period, Baccarat produced another set in gold-enameled red crystal, with slightly different shapes and very similar Japanese-style decoration.
