Price on request

Entrance of Monseigneur Henry de Lorraine. Advertising placard. 1627. CALLOT Jacques (Nancy 1592 † 1635) Original etching and typographed text. H453xW375mm. A few traces of median folds and printing, a small wormhole at the 11th verse in the left-hand column, a short tear in the upper margin and a few rare freckles. Meaume, n°490, Lieure, n°581. Unique state. Proof of one of the first editions, on laid paper (grape watermark), with margins and bearing the following handwritten annotation at the foot "Rare before being cut". This is one of the rare proofs printed with letterpress to be used as a poster announcing the publication of the work edited by Sébastien Philippe the same year in Nancy: "Combat à la barrière faict en Cour de Lorraine le 14 febvrier en l'année présente 1627. Représenté par les Discours & Poësie du Sieur Henry Humbert, accompagné des figures du Sieur Jacques Callot. Dedicated to Madame la Duchesse de Chevreuse". To our knowledge, only the British Museum has a copy. "L'Entrée de Monseigneur Henry de Lorraine" is a plate from the suite of ten prints "Le Combat à la barrière" depicting the festive floats and the hall where the tournament was held in honor of the Duchesse de Chevreuse (then in exile in Lorraine following the discovery of her role in the plot against Richelieu) by her cousin the Duke Charles IV of Lorraine, on February 14, 1627 in the Palais Ducal in Nancy. Henry Humbert's account of the festivities was published, and Callot's prints were used to illustrate the work.
