The Saqqah-khaneh school of artists (also known as "Sagha Khaneh") drew inspiration from a wide variety of classical Persian sources; including cults, rituals and products of popular culture. The best-known artists associated with this school are Parviz Tanavoli, Faramarz Pilaram, Massoud Arabshahi and Sadegh Tabrizi. One of the founders and main supporters was Charles Hossein Zenderoudi. Persian modernism was thus born in the 1960s with this movement strongly characterized by symbolism, defined by a combination of religious imagery and traditional decorative elements with modern painting techniques. The word "Saqqa-khaneh" originally refers to a type of public fountain shrine found in the old towns and villages of Iran. These sites are considered holy places: candles are often burned, green and black hangings are hung, while protective iron grills and calligraphic panels are engraved with decorative motifs and Koranic verses. Charles Hossein Zenderoudi, painter and sculptor, is considered one of the greatest Iranian artists of our time.
