Two-body buffet by Constantin Potheau Signed "Constantin Potheau, ébéniste à Paris". France Circa 1895 Walnut Height: 275 cm; Width: 160 cm; Depth: 60 cm Handsome plinth-mounted buffet with two carcasses and rounded pediment, executed in walnut in the Regency style. Richly carved with lambrequins, acanthus leaves, lattice work and rosettes. Four double doors open onto shelves and drawers. Broken leaves allow a wider opening and can be folded down the sides of the cabinet. Biography: In 1881, Georges and Constantin Potheau took over the business of Charmois et Lemarinier and formed Potheau Frères at 21, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine in Paris. They became famous for their complete, simple and rich furnishings. At the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, they won a silver medal for a superb carved mantelpiece. In 1894, only Constantin remained in the business.
