The name Madoura conjures up Picasso rather than Suzanne Ramié. Although the master helped to make the Provençal studio famous with his vibrant ceramics, she was the real moving force, and one of her most original pieces is soon coming up for sale in Cannes.

A strange wading bird moves forward with glistening, deep blue plumage marked by lighter lines. While the bird's body is in terracotta, the rudimentary aigrette is outlined with iron spikes on its head, and the same material forms its legs, which end in a triangular base.
