Pioneering Comic Book Artist, Lily Renée Phillips, Dies at 101

Published on , by La Gazette Drouot

In the 1940s, Phillips was one of few women in the comic industry. A refugee from Nazi-annexed Austria, she drew strong female characters, such as Señorita Rio, who occupied traditionally male roles. She remained largely unrecognized until the last two decades thanks to the efforts of historian, Trina Robbins.
