The group of 25 pieces by Claire Debril (b. 1927), coming from an art lover's collection, exerted considerable charm with their brilliantly mastered glazes. Estimates were doubled and a red and black decorated terracotta vase (h. 40.5 cm) fetched €2,898. Eyes then turned to this model designed by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and produced in the Madoura workshops run by Georges and Suzanne Ramué. It was noticeable that interest in these ceramics dating from his long stay on-site between 1948 and 1955 is undimmed. This vase, entitled "The King", with its two high handles and underglaze decoration carved with a knife and partially brushed achieved a royal €40,320. The master's love affair with the arts of the kiln inspired a prolific output (there are said to be thousands of pieces), which completely revived the artisanal pottery industry in Vallauris.
