Mai-Thu: The Discreet Charm of the Family

The Franco-Vietnamese artist was celebrated in Caen with two paintings on silk extolling love between young people and a gathering of the generations: scenes highly acclaimed, as always.

Mai-Thu (1906-1980), Five Generations, 1952, ink and color on silk, signed and dated, 50.5 x 27cm/19.9 x 10.6 in.
Result: €280,000

A double triumph for Mai-Thu, with excellent scores of €280,000 going to each work, typically painted in ink and color on silk. First came a Couple avec éventail sous un cerisier en fleur (Couple with a Fan Under a Cherry Tree in Bloom), a delicate scene painted in 1974 with decidedly shy lovers in traditional costume: she is hiding behind a fan and he timidly offers a flower (57 x 51.5 cm/22.4 x 20.3 in., visible). The buyer received a certificate of authenticity issued by the Mai-Thu Committee with the number "MT 0412". The original frame was, as usual, embellished by the artist. From the same Normandy collection, another painting by Mai-Thu, signed and dated, was then unveiled and rewarded with the same bid: Cinq générations (Five Generations) captured in 1952 (50.5 x 27 cm/19.8 x 10.62 in). This was a recurring (and highly popular) subject in the output of the artist, who loved to portray old people, mothers and small children together in interiors or gardens. Like the Couple, the work will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being compiled by the Committee. Next, from 19th-century China, came a celadon jade statuette of a horse carrying a scroll on its back galloping over tumultuous waves, on a wooden base carved with lingzhi (22 x 9 cm/8.7 x 3.5 in). This lively group sold for €26,000. Last but not least, a Chanel doll from around 2006 wearing the famous black suit, with the reference number 463 (Medicom edition), in its original box (h. 72 cm/28.3 in), was adopted for €13,000.
