While Henri Martin’s poetic visions of the Garonne and the Lot’s landscapes outnumber his views of Venice reflected in its canals, they were another of the post-Impressionist painter’s favorite themes—and a pretext for daring experiments.

Its tall white shape overlooking the Grand Canal, Santa Maria della Salute was designed by the Baroque architect Baldassare Longhena and built between 1631 and 1681. Since then, its landmark dome on an eight-sided drum—designed to evoke a crown offered to the Virgin Mary—has been part of the magic of Venice, especially for painters from across Europe.
