The Dominique de Roquemaurel Galitzine collection, up for auction in Monaco, comes at a turning point in the rediscovery of Dora Maar's work. After the Centre Pompidou rescued her from the shadows in 2019, she was no longer seen as Picasso's muse but as an artist in her own right.

Though belatedly rehabilitated by a Centre Pompidou retrospective in 2019, Dora Maar remains an enigmatic artist, better known as Picasso's lover and muse . Her studio contents were sold in Paris in November 1998, the year after her death. There, at the Hôtel Drouot , Dominique de Roquemaurel, a collector fired by a tireless quest for discoveries and little-known artists, acquired two boxes of works at Piasa's sale without even knowing what they contained.
