In 1965, woolly, black-footed bronze sheep were born in the living room of François-Xavier Lalanne’s Paris apartment on rue Robiquet in the 6th arrondissement. In January of the following year, a flock of 24 sheep, some of them with and without heads, including four black ones, was exhibited at the Salon de la jeune peinture française (Salon of Young French Painters) at the Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris. The astonishment was total, especially since the animals could be used as chairs or beds. Lalanne called the sculpture group Pour Polyphème in reference to the episode in Homer’s Odyssey when Ulysses and his companions escape from Polyphemus hiding under the blinded Cyclops’ sheep. Lalanne liked sheep because they opened the door not only to artworld but also to the jet set, who loved his creatures. He drew his inspiration from the great tradition of animal art, for example François Pompon, his boundless imagination and his desire to humorously, light-heartedly abolish the borders between the arts. Over the years, he began using stone and bronze so that the sheep could graze outdoors and withstand bad weather. Ewes joined the ram and lambs in the 1990s: the family was complete at last.
