All for One and One for All! The Musketeers' Regalia Comes to Auction

The descendants of the last captain of the Black Musketeers, the Marquis de La Grange, have kept together the regalia of the famous French company. A special opportunity for collectors.

Restoration period, 1814-1815. Set of six standards and banners of King Louis XVIII's 2nd Company of Black Musketeers, presented on a wooden frame (185 x 242 cm/72.83 x 95.27 in), including the flag (80 x 80 cm/31.49 x 31.49in) and standard (52 x 54 cm/20.47 x 21.2 in), the four trumpet banners in blue silk, edged on all four sides with gold passementerie bangs (49 x 51 cm/19.2 x 20.07 in), the four trumpet banner cords in passementerie mixed with silver, gold and blue silk threads, and the two flag ties model 1814 in ivory silk (h. 55 cm/21.6 in).

The Musketeers are still popular. The proof is in the movie industry, with the recent release of The Three Musketeers: Milady , a new opus featuring the historical heroes who were glorified by the verve of Alexandre Dumas, as early as 1844. And the art market is no exception. Swords , headdresses, soubrevestes (a sleeveless garment worn over other clothing) and paintings of the famous elite  military unit are common in the auction room. Regalia, on the other hand, are extremely rare. And for good reason: each company had only one flag, one standard and, in theory, eight pennants or trumpet banners—in reality probably four—which were carefully protected. "When I saw these pieces, I said to myself that they were exceptional and even impossible to find. It's magical to have found this complete set," emphasizes expert Jean-Claude Dey.
