Marc-Augustin Lebrun crafted this salt cellar around 1850, probably for Grand Duchess Helena Pavolvna (1807-1873). It is expected to fetch €8,000/10,000. During the Roman Empire, salt was a form of currency. Legionnaires received part of their pay in salt—hence the word “salary” from the Latin root sal for salt.…
