Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621-1674), Pharaoh Returns Sarah to Abraham, oil on canvas, signed and dated on the second step “G.V. Eeckhout. fecit./A. 1669”, 139 x 174 cm (54.72 x 68.5 in).

The composition is masterly, the figures are impressively realistic and the lighting effects skillfully heighten the dramatic tension. Gerbrand van den Eeckhout depicted the saddest episode in the story of Abraham as told in Chapter 12 of Genesis, when an angry Pharaoh sends Abraham and his wife into exile.
