Though the model is not as famous as the creator of this print, he is hardly unknown, as he is none other than Dr Gachet: a friend of Van Gogh who taught him how to etch.

On May 12, with the same auction house, a sanguine print of the same portrait of “Man with a Pipe” inspired a splendid bid of €204,800 from an Israeli collector. So we can expect the estimate to be topped this…
