This sale presents a historic overview of the discipline with works from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The list of masters includes a veritable who's who from Andreani and Piranesi to Charles Meryon, Miro and Picasso.

Private devotional images were already printed from woodcuts in the 14 th century. But new engraving techniques such as burin, etching and drypoint were introduced simultaneously in Germany and Italy in around 1510. Many engravers like Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) studied in the workshops of goldsmiths. Artists like Rembrandt , Piranesi and Goya raised the medium to a noble status, and their prints—and various states—were highly sought after as artworks in their own right.
