Jean-Jacques Sempé (1932-2022)

Known for his illustrations for the cover of The New Yorker, Sempé was also popular for Le Petit Nicolas, authored by René Goscinny, whose wife Anne spoke at the funeral at Paris’ Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés on Friday. French artist Gabs and novelist Benoit Dutertre also paid tribute to the cartoonist.

This oil on panel by Jean-Jacques Lagrenée (1739-1821), depicting an 'Ancient Sacrifice', is thought to have come from the sale that followed the death of Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, which took place in Paris from April 6 to 8,1777.
