Francisco de Goya (1746-1828)

This collection of a Parisian aesthete who chose to remain anonymous attracted much attention and two high-level preemptions by the Louvre.

Time and patience were the key factors in the auction house's ability to assemble a coherent, high-quality ensemble of works of art, furniture and carpets from a wide variety of provenances. It took three years, but the gamble paid off.

Juliet Wilson-Bareau, an expert on Francisco de Goya, told The Guardian she believes many works credited to the Spanish painter were executed by studio assistants and need to be reattributed. She curated the exhibition "Goya: Avant-Garde Genius" which runs in Agen, France, until February 10.

Goya was 25 when his painted this 1771 work, his first known work. Depicting Hannibal crossing the Alps, it was made for a competition at the Academy of Fine Arts Parma, won by Paolo Borroni. It was bought by the friends of the Prado for €3.3M. (Quotidien de l’Art)

Police apprehended a criminal gang in the eastern Spanish region of Valencia that was selling forged paintings attributed to artists including Goya, José Bennliure y Gil and Nicolás Falcó. A total of 27 works were seized with a combined value of €1.2 million.
