Our Lady with scroll Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Southern Germany or Tyrol. Gothic. 15th century. This is undoubtedly the work of a great master. This marvellous gothic image transmits great spirituality through its beauty and the serenity of Mary´s face. The Virgin Mary is on her throne, wearing gilded and polychromed clothing in green tones, which create great chromatic effect in the sculpture. She holds a large scroll in her hands. On the back is a locked reliquary. There is a Madonna and Child by the sculptor Michel Erhard in the Bode Museum in Berlin which has great stylistic similarity to this Mary. The sweetness of the slightly leaning face, the almond eyes, the fine nose, long locks of hair, the delicate hands and long, slender fingers, and the elaborate drapery of the clothing. Another similar piece is the "Isenheim Virgin and Child" by Martin Hoffman from Basel, dated in 1507, which is kept at the Louvre in Paris, inventory no. 1833. Provenance: Acquired in Sotheby´s on 4/7/1985, lot nº 26. Comparative bibliography: "Gotik in Tirol. Malerei und Plastik des Mittelalters", catalogue of the exhibition in the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinanddeum, Innsbruck, 1950, p. 19. 106 x 50 x 32 cm.
