Large gilded copper processional cross with its shaft and affixed figures with champlevé enamels. Spain. Possibly Burgos. Gothic. 14th century. On the front, in the centre, is the figure of the crucified Christ, on each side “the penitent thief” Saint Dismas and Gestas “the impenitent thief” are engraved and enamelled on their plaques affixed to the crucifix. More towards the ends, the Virgin Mary and Saint John complete the scene of the Calvary, all of them being figures affixed to the cross. At the upper end is an angel, and at the lower end, souls in purgatory. The entire surface is engraved with foliage motif decoration. Engraved on the back is decoration, in the centre is Christ Pantocrator and at each end of the cross, the tetramorph. The shaft has three more enamelled plaques, which appear to be from a later period. A cross that is comparable to this one is the gothic processional cross which originally came from Urruez, and which is kept at the Altarpiece Museum in Burgos at the Saint Steven Church in Burgos. Cross measurements: 61 x 34 cm. Christ measurements: 10 cm.
