Gilded and embossed copper wooden processional cross. Gothic. 13th-14th century. A bronze figure of Christ with champlevé enamel is affixed to the cross. Limoges. France. Romanesque. Circa 1250 - 1275. The cross has clover shaped ends, with a pasta vitrea medallion in the centre of each. The entire copper surface is profusely decorated with a frieze of circles which have a clover leaf in the centre, with a clover in each leaf. The back has the same decoration and has been restored at a later date. The Christ figure is crowned. Flaws in most of the gilding. The enamels have been restored at a later date. Cross measurements: 59 x 34 cm. Height of Christ figure: 15 cm. Provenance: acquired in Sotheby's on 8-9/7/1981, lot nº 222.
