Walnut mudejar bargueno chest with bone and boxwood marquetry. Possibly from an Aragon workshop. 16th - 17th centuries. Double lidded, on the inside there is a large upper drawer, eight lower drawers and two doors, both profusely decorated with fine marquetry depicting rosettes, half-moons, plants, arrows, and on the two small doors, architectural façades. All are framed with a moulding made up of small interlocking triangles. The inside of the lid is decorated with a central rosette surrounded by eight small rosettes with an eight-pointed star and garlands forming flowers and interlaced edging. The marquetry decoration on the exterior of the lid has an architectural structure of four large arcades, which divide the space and are held up by columns between which is a vase of flowers. In the two central spaces are two palaces, and on both sides are two fountains. Similar examples to this one can be seen in the Madrid Museum of Decorative Arts, inventory ref. 2820; in the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo, ref. no. 11.588 and at the Hispanic Society of America. The hinges and iron fittings are later additions. 56 x 91 x 45 cm.
