Attributed to Damià Forment (Valencia, c. 1480 - Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja, 1540) "Madonna and Child" Sculpted Vinaixa stone figure. Renaissance. Circa 1530. This sculpture bears testament to the evolution in the renaissance style in the north of Spain in the first third of the 16th century. Proof of this is in the Madonna and Child´s faces, turned towards the faithful with the aim of creating a bond of affection with them. The "contrapposto" position, the great vitality and sculptural strength of the group, the elaborate sculpting of the draperies and the sinuous composition and graceful treatment of the Madonna are characteristics of Damià Forment´s style. The quality and style of the sculpture also show a series of similarities to his work of the same period, such as the figures on the altarpiece at Huesca Cathedral (1520 - 1534), at the Monastery of Saint Mary of Poblet (1527 - 1540), or Our Lady of the Snow and Saint Anne the Trinitarian, which were created circa 1530, in Salvatierra de Esca (Zaragoza). Provenance: Private collection, France. 93 x 36 x 36 cm.
