Piety. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculptural group. Late 15th century. Scene depicting Mary as mother, gathering the dead Christ, descended from the cross, onto her lap. The mastery of the sculptor allows the dramatism of the moment to be transmitted, when Mary, with her face altered by pain, yet serene, holds her son who appears inert, due to the sculptor´s mastery in showing the weight, abandon and lassitude of the body. The magnificent and manifold folds in Mary´s clothing are outstanding. Christ´s face expresses great emotion, stunningly depicted by the sculptor. Some flaws. 103 x 55 x 40 cm.
