"The trial of Christ". Sculpted ivory relief. Carolingian Period. 6th - 9th century.  Narrative ivories were typical in the Carolingian period, which suggests to us that this relief would have been part of a set, or a plaque of various compartments from top to bottom showing, in this case, the Passion of Christ in various scenes. It could also have been a plaque for one of the magnificent bindings of the Holy Scriptures that were made in the Carolingian period, with ivory and stone. As is typical, the scene is narrated with the characteristic depiction of small, light, draped figures in profile. There are some slight flaws. 4,5 x 18,5 cm.  It comes with a dating study from 2013.
