A bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild, vintage 2017. Category: Red wine. Pauillac, Bordeaux. Level: A. Château Lafite Rothschild is a winery located in Bordeaux, France, owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild. The name Lafite comes from the Gascon word "la hite", meaning "little hill". Located in the large wine-producing village of Pauillac, in the Médoc region northwest of Bordeaux, it is believed that there were already vineyards there at the end of the 17th century. In the early 18th century Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, refined the estate's winemaking techniques and introduced its wines to the most refined strata of European nobility. He soon became known as the "prince of wine", and the wine of Château Lafite was called "the king's wine" thanks to the influential support of Marshal de Richelieu. By the end of the 18th century the winery's fame was fully established; even Thomas Jefferson visited the estate, becoming a lifelong consumer of its wines.
