BENIN - ZAPPA RITUALE IN BRONZO Nigeria, sec XVIII (?) Bel pezzo in ottime condizioni. A BENIN CEREMONIAL STAFF IN BRONZE Nigeria, 18th (?) century An interesting cast bronze staff which faithfully replicates an agricultural hoe. The long handle, has relief decorations with intertwining lines that depict vegetal fibres and terminating with Queen Mother adorned by a tall woven headdress. The "blade" of the staff, decorated with geometric motifs of knotted ropes, is joined to the handle by a carved form in the shape of a stylised head. Due to the pronounced facial features, the staff can be stylistically placed to Benin production from the so called Middle Period (XVII century). The image of the woven headdress of Queen Mother was actually introduced during the so called Early Period, which was to become a recurring motif in Benin iconography. Rare in good condition. L. 44 cm.
