"Carte van Sente Piters tusschen Scelde ende Leye". 19th c Manuscript, 121 x 194 cm, black and red pencil on brown paper (folded and reinforced). Exceptional 19th-c. copy of a manuscript map, dated 1690, by Gudwalus van der Mariën, Provost of Saint Peter's in Ghent, showing the area from the Heuvelpoort to the Ketelvest including the Saint Peter's Abbey, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (destroyed in 1799), Poerhuis (destr. 1783), Peterseliepoort (Kortrijksepoort) etc. The map shows all the plots and lists the house-owners who - according to the tax book- needed to pay taxes to the abbey, the hospital etc. During the 19th c., the map and list of names were of particular importance given that these were copied more than once. Names such as Monijn and particularly Waldach in the register, occurred mainly during the 17th and 18th c. and in the Saint Peter's neigbourhood in particular. Another copy of the map belongs to the State Archives, where also maps of Wortegem-Petegem (n. 552), dated 1684, and Desselgem and Beveren (n. 559), dated 1675, by the same Gudwalus are present. Ref. Catalogus van de Kaartenverzameling van het Rijksarchief te Gent, (1358) 16de eeuw-midden 20ste eeuw (1989), n. 263 (dated 1793, after the original map erroneously dated 13 August 1790 instead of 1690).
