Cecil informs his correspondent of his gratitude for supplying statistical information useful to the Foreign Office, including, 'I am greatly obliged to you for your letter containing your comments on Admiral Jellicoe's letter. I realise the great amount of work that a statistical search of this description must give you…' 11th February 1916; 'These are exceedingly useful returns… I think Copper should include wire & I should like the figures about Nitrate of Soda in future issues. Could you let me have a statement as to the way in which home consumption figures have been arrived at', 3rd March 1916; 'I am very much obliged to you for sending me the press cutting respecting the memoranda we issued in reply to the attacks by the ''Daily Mail''. I agree with you that as a rule we do not wish to give neutral countries the idea that we are entirely satisfied with their conduct, but in the specific case of the ''Daily Mail'' attack I think our joinder was justified and did good', Cecil adding the holograph postscript, 'The truth is that in a democratic country you cannot afford to 'lose face' & so must defend yourself if attacked', 28th September 1916; 'Very many thanks for the Statistical Notes which you have sent for my use in any statement I may have to make to the Imperial Conference', 26th February 1917.
