MARQUIS DE SADE: (1740-1814) French Writer, Nobleman and Revolutionary Politician. Best-known for his erotic works and sexual fantasies with violence and lack of morality. Author of The 120 Days of Sodom. Sade spent thirty-two years of his life imprisoned and most of his works were written while incarcerated. The word sadism was coined from his name. Rare A.L.S., `De Sade´, four pages, folio, n.p., [May-June 1795], to his notary Charles Gaufridy, in French. Sade needs money urgently and states ´..sixty thousand francs, to pay urgent debts, and for an advantageous investment waiting for me in Paris.´ Sade further explains that he has put for sale his land of Mazan and suggests three deals to get funds, the first being a loan `..payable after my death with my Mas de Cabane as guarantee..´, the second being a partial sale done `..very secretly..because of the main mortgage of Madame Sade who fortunately is not very keen on Arles..´, and the third being a full sale. He further reports on each of the options, mentioning that he has found a money lender, farmer Lombard, and a second one named Chassanis for the sale. Further again, and referring to his properties manager in Arles, Sade says in part `..on the other hand , Lion might get angry if we do not meet him, and could noise about these deals and with such comments affect them…´ Before concluding Sade recommends Gaudifry to meet `..the son of the former innkeeper of the Cheval Blanc.. one of my friends for the last thirty years..´ Folded, with overall age wear and creasing, mostly to borders.
