A FINELY CARVED DINGYAO DISH, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY Size: 20.9 cm (D) The widely flared six lobed rim with unglazed edge, incised with dashing elegance, across the centre, angled well and rim, with a lotus spray in flower, beneath a clear glaze of ivory tone, the reverse with characteristic tear markings to the glaze. An almost identical Ding bowl in the National Museum, Tokyo, is illustrated on p. 67 of 'Song Ceramics', by Mary Tregear, London, 1982, as no. 56. She remarks that 'the angled sides of the bowl seem to be evidence of the early Song date. The freely incised decoration in double line, which depicts lotus flowers, and the composition of the design across the entire form are also characteristic of this earlier style'.
