AN ICON SHOWING THE PIETÀ Veneto-Cretan, 2nd half 15th century Tempera on wood panel. Executed on a gold ground. The haloes ornately punched. The Virgin, seated on a rock, holds on her knees the lifeless Christ, naked save for the loincloth. The Mother of God shown with her hands in prayer. The work represents the iconography of the Western Pietà, a representation unkown to Byzantine tradition, which derives from the German statues (Vesperbild) and appears in the Italian iconography in the 14th century. The new subject, which is the Western version of the Byzantine Lamentation, was established in Cretan painting during the 15th century and enjoyed considerable popularity in both Orthodox and Catholic circles. Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Goldgrund, Nimben ornamental punziert. 26,8 x 21,2 cm. Vor dem Kreuz sitzt die Gottesmutter mit gefalteten Haenden mit dem toten Leib Christi, der ueber ihren Knien liegt. Im Hintergrund erscheint eine stilisierte Felsenkulisse. Min. vertikale Rissbildung mit kleineren Substanzverlusten.
